Chapter 16

Sadie suppressed a laugh as Erich shifted his massive weight on the tiny stool. Jamison’s lab had state-of-the-art equipment, but provided little when it came to personal comfort.

The man in question was now bent over a brown clipboard, slowly annotating his findings with the precise methodology of a man with nowhere to go.

Sadie leaned against a counter. “So, where have you been?”

Jamison straightened but didn’t look away from his clipboard. “I had other engagements,” he said. He moved to a cluttered desk and picked up his tablet.

“Business or personal?” Sadie asked, moving with him. Jamison didn’t answer. Typical. While the guy was a bonafide genius, his social skills were seriously lacking. Adam insisted on working with him because he got results, but he wasn’t the one who had to deal with the prickly scientist on a regular basis. Fortunately, this wasn’t Sadie’s first experience with this kind of personality. She’d helped raise a teenage girl, after all.

“Jamison?” He didn’t respond, instead continuing to read something on his tablet.

Sadie snatched the device out of Jamison’s hands. That got his attention. He made an attempt to grab it back, but Sadie was too fast.

“Listen, Jamison. Odinshield pays you a lot of money and they expect results,” she snapped. She gestured toward the lab equipment. “All of this belongs to Odinshield. So unless you had a personal emergency, Adam wants all of your working hours figuring out this serum.”

Jamison’s face flushed. “Who are you to tell me what to do?” He snatched the tablet back and glared at her. “I’ve been doing this since you’ve been in diapers. Sit down, girl. I’ll get to you when I’m done.”

Sadie’s back straightened. “First, you can address me as Dr. Carmichael. Second, I’m the link between you and the man who is paying you.

“You have no idea what I’m dealing with,” he seethed, standing at his full height so that he could look down at her.

“Then tell me? Maybe we can help,” Sadie said.

“This is above your level of comprehension, Dr. Carmichael,” he said, spitting out her name like it was a curse. “And if you ever touch my stuff again—”

He clamped his mouth shut, his eyes bulging as he focused above her head. Sadie initially thought he was having a seizure before she felt an electric presence behind her. She spun around. Erich was standing there, arms folded and eyes narrowed.

“What will you do if Dr. Carmichael touches your stuff?” he asked, his voice calm.

“I…I just meant…” Jamison’s voice trailed off. As Erich let the silence hang for a minute, Jamison’s face grew more red. Sadie could feel her own cheeks grow warm as the tension in the room grew. She placed her hand on Erich’s arm and gave it a squeeze.

Erich glanced at her and then back to Jamison. “Sadie asked you a question,” he said. “Answer her.”

Jamison wetted his lips nervously. “My absence was due to a personal matter,” he said.

“Are you alright? Can Odinshield help?”

“No,” Jamison said, shaking his head. “I dealt with it.
